A few months later I met with our client for the Bay View project, and I knew John would be perfect for it. It was finally going to happen. This beautiful and unique home turned out to be one of John’s last designs. During construction of the home, John was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was unable to see the completion of the project. I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to work with John and get to know a man who I had admired his work for so long.
Bay View is a sentimental home for us. We finally had an opportunity to work with an architect who I considered a local legend. Jot Potvin’s designs were well known and recognized in our beautiful town. Having worked as a carpenter on a handful of them, it was my dream to one day build one of his designs. As my daughter entered the 3rd grade, I became aware of the fact that John’s wife was her teacher. Every Monday for that entire year, I sent my daughter in with the same message, “My daddy is a builder and wants to build one of your husband’s homes.” Fast forward a few years and I finally had a chance to meet with John. As I was walking him through our Little Sarasota Bay Coast Contemporary project, I told him about my plan with my daughter and he erupted with laughter, “You’re the guy!” he exclaimed. We had a good laugh about it and we set out to find the right project.
